Educational Facility

The mission of the PGFI Educational Facility is to educate and train researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in genomic research. As part of our educational mission, PGFI sponsors a summer internship program for qualified undergraduates who are interested in genomic research. The education facility also conducts workshops for faculty and staff to get hands on training in genomic techniques.

What people are saying about PGFI workshops...

“[Attending] this [microarray] workshop really helped me, with my background mainly in medical imaging and clinical research, to understand the microarray techniques. I'm interested in collaborating with faculties in PGFI in biomedical informatics -- combining neuroimaging and genomic tests, such as microarrays.”
Rong Chen, PhD, Research Asst Professor of Radiology

Upcoming Professional Development Workshops

All workshops are held in the PGFI Educational Facility, Carolyn Lynch Labs, 433. S. University Avenue. At this time, PGFI offers its workshops at no cost to the participants. Class size is limited. Please refer to the application procedures under the specific workshop dates.

Basic Wet Laboratory Techniques for Genomics Research

This workshop is aimed at researchers who are interested in molecular biology and genomics, but who do not have the opportunity to learn or use basic wet laboratory techniques as part of their primary research. This six-day workshop will teach methodologies for isolating genomic DNA from mammalian cells, PCR, restriction enzyme digests, plasmid purification and automated DNA sequencing. The workshop will be taught at a basic level, with no previous laboratory experience required or expected. Enrollment is limited to 8 participants.

Upcoming dates:

  • 11/13 - 11/20/09 for Penn Faculty
    Time:
    11/13: 1-3 PM and
    11/16-11/20: 12-4 PM (daily; this is a 6-day workshop)
Location: PGFI Educational Facility, 328 Lynch Laboratories, 433 University Ave.

Advanced Techniques: Single Cell Manipulations Using Laser Capture Microdissection

Description: PGFI is offering an advanced workshop for University of Pennsylvania faculty members, postdocs and grad students. This free workshop will train researchers in single cell manipulations using Laser Capture Microdissection. Participants will get hands-on experience with manipulation of single cells using the Leica LMD system. Participants will be given samples to use in the workshop but are also invited to bring samples from their own labs to use if they prefer.

October 19-22: see below for specific dates and times of 2-day workshops

Note: One workshop is for faculty only. Three workshops are for non-faculty (research associates, postdocs, and graduate students). All workshops are two days long.

  • Mon., Oct. 19 - Tues., Oct. 20, 2009, 9 AM - 12 PM each day (postdocs & graduate students)

  • Mon., Oct. 19 - Tues., Oct. 20, 2009, 1 PM - 4 PM each day (postdocs & graduate students)

  • Wed., Oct. 21 - Thurs., Oct. 22, 2009, 9 AM - 12 PM each day (postdocs & graduate students)

  • Wed., Oct. 21 - Thurs., Oct. 22, 2009, 1 PM - 4 PM each day (faculty)
