Research and Development Facilities
A primary mission of PGFI is to lead the development of new genomics technologies at Penn. In furtherance of this mission, PGFI houses three research and development facilities available for use by its members. In addition, it supports core facilities consisting of state-of-the-art centralized services and technologies that cannot be readily reproduced in individual laboratories in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
Research Facilities
PGFI Provides
to Its Members
The facilities listed below are devoted to developing and implementing state-of-the-art genomics approaches that cannot be supported by existing cores or commercial services. The R&D facilities, equipment, expert personnel, and training are available to the members of the PGFI at a subsidized rate. Although the Facilities are "members-only", we allow members to sponsor others to use the facilities
The PGFI anticipates developing additional specialized cutting edge R&D facilities for use by PGFI members, as the PENN community need becomes apparent.
Core Facilities
Receiving Support from PGFI
The Core Facilities of the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute support University of Pennsylvania (PENN) investigators with state-of-the-art centralized services and technologies that cannot be readily reproduced in individual laboratories in an efficient, cost-effective manner. Each of the Core Facilities provides useful and appropriate services to PENN investigators and their collaborators at other institutions, with an emphasis on new and emerging technologies and specialty services.
Bioinformatics (Basic)
The Penn Bioinformatics Core (PBiC) provides computer resources, support and training to the University of Pennsylvania's biomedical research community. PBiC's goal is to ensure that scientists across the PENN community are able to effectively exploit existing and emerging computational technologies, especially related to genomics scale datasets.

Molecular Diagnosis and Genotyping
The Molecular Diagnosis and Genotyping Facility provides molecular biology assays to investigators. Molecular assays are critical to many aspects of basic, clinical and population research, including molecular stratification of patients entering clinical protocols, molecular epidemiological and pharmacogenetic studies, as well as longitudinal follow-up of patients in clinical investigations. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping has become central to the advancement of molecular genetics. At the Molecular Diagnosis and Genotyping Facility, we use the ABI Prism 7900HT allelic discrimination platform.
